Petroleum ladies continue to raise funds for charity

MIRI: Miri Petroleum Women Association ( PWPM) has been raising funds for local charitable bodies all year round.

Proceeds from their recent Christmas Bazaar Sales and various other activities such as its weekly dance and cooking deminstration and sale of handicraft went to the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) in support of its new transit home in the city.

A cheque for the amount was handed over by its president, Srimurniyati Cranfield, to SCCS’ chairperson here Jocelyn Hee during a gathering in Piasau Park recently.

The second Children Cancer Centre operated by Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society is located next to Miri Hospital.

According to Hee, the threeroom centre was bought and renovated at a cost of RM600,000. It would be able to accommodate five patients and their guardians and a caretaker. It also has an office, living room for gathering and sharing sessions, a meeting room and a fully- equipped kitchen.

This transit home is therefore a temporary shelter for cancer-stricken children and their caretakers.

SCCS has recorded an increase in childhood cancers in northern Sarawak, especially in rural areas.

The distance and difficulty in obtaining reliable and affordable transportation are obstacles to families sending their children to hospital for treatment.

“This transit home is therefore a temporary shelter for cancerstricken children and their caretakers.

“It is also known as a home-awayfrom-home to cater for their every need during their stay here while seeking treatment at the hospital,” Hee said.

Srimurniyati meanwhile said: “We hope to continue supporting SCCS in whatever way we can, like helping to maintain the transit home and providing services to those in need.”
