UTM, Ericsson launch M’sia’s first innovation centre for 5G

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s first Innovation Centre for 5G ( IC5G) was launched yesterday in collaborat­ion with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia ( UTM) and Ericsson.

Endorsed by the Higher Education Ministry ( MOHE), the UTM-Ericsson IC5G features 5G innovation­s, a 5G research lab and learning space in UTM Kuala Lumpur ( KL) campus, which is expected to benefit around 2,000 students from institutio­ns and industries in Malaysia.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said such initiative­s were encouragin­g, as Malaysia takes a step closer to become a Smart Digital Nation by 2020.

“This centre will also better position Malaysia at the forefront of 5G and among the countries leading technology- enabled economic transforma­tion in the South East Asia and Oceania region,” he told reporters after launching the centre at UTM KL, here.

Also present were UTM vicechance­llor, Prof Datuk Dr Wahid Omar and Head of Ericsson Malaysia and Sri Lanka, Todd Ashton.

Meanwhile, Ashton said that the opening of IC5G would help realise the vision of a networked society in Malaysia, where every person and industry was empowered to reach their full potential.

“Globally, 5G is expected to begin its commercial rollout in 2020, and as part of our long-term commitment to Malaysia and its citizens, we are bringing the latest advanced technology and knowledge,” he said.

The IC5G will have three main functional­ities, consisting of 5G innovation showcase, research lab and learning space.

Ericsson and UTM will showcase 18 demonstrat­ions ranging form robotics, Internet of Things ( IoT) transforma­tion, Augmented Reality (AR) and 5G for industries. — Bernama
