MAICCI hopes workers shortage can be resolved

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry ( MAICCI) hopes the government will initiate measures soon to address the workers shortage in various sectors of industry in the country.

Its president Tan Sri K Kenneth Eswaran said the absence of sufficient foreign workers in particular, has placed in dire straits, many Indian- owned businesses.

This is a major issue for us and if not resolved in a month or two, many businesses risk shutting down.

“This is a major issue for us and if not resolved in a month or two, many businesses risk shutting down,” he told a press conference yesterday.

He was speaking after a courtesy call by him and MAICCI board members to Senate President Senator Datuk Seri S A Vigneswaran, at Parliament.

Kenneth said besides discussing ways to improve the capacity of Indian businesses, MAICCI is also willing to foster closer ties with the Malaysian Indian Congress ( MIC), to ensure a stable and united community.

Meanwhile, Vigneswaran who is also MIC vice-president, assured the MAICCI that issues concerning the Indian business community would be taken up with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“The community is fragile and when issues hit, it is easily impacted. This is why we need to bring the issue of workers shortage to a closure at the soonest,” he added. — Bernama
