KUALA LUMPUR: Packaging manufacturer and leading property developer, Scientex Bhd, targets to fill up the capacity of its newly-commenced biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film manufacturing plant over the next two years.

Scientex said the new BOPP film manufacturing plant, with an annual capacity of 60,000 metric tonnes, would effectively strengthen the group’s capability to supply flexible packaging film to packaging converters and other manufacturers in the region.

“Our BOPP film is undergoing trial runs with potential customers in Malaysia and Southeast Asia with encouraging feedback to date.

“Together with the supply to our joint venture partner, Futamura Chemical Co Ltd, which would take up one-third of our capacity, we are well on track to reach our target of filling up the BOPP plant capacity over the next two years,” said managing director Lim Peng Jin.

He said overall, Scientex integrated flexible consumer packaging operations was strongly positioned to tap into growth opportunities in Asia Pacific, where consumer- driven demand was anticipated to be on an uptrend for the long-term.

Going forward, Lim said with wide product portfolio, Scientex was ready to capture a greater share of the regional demand and achieve optimal utilisation rate for the new plant.

“In the first quarter of financial year 2017, we experienced slower order of industrial and consumer packaging in Malaysia due to weaker consuemer sentiment and economic uncertainties.

“That said, the region holds positive long- term prospects in line with various development initiatives,” he added. — Bernama
