MARUDI: The womenfolk here are praised for helping to form groups such as Serakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) to gather them under one roof to seek common objectives.

Giving this message was Mulu assemblyman Gerawat Gala at the opening of Marudi SIDS preChristmas dinner at Baram Civic Centre here yesterday.

He thanked the state SIDS president Tan Sri Datuk Empiang Jabu for looking into the plight of Dayak women in the state so they could improve and develop themselves.

The dinner were attended by some 600 SIDS members from 36 units in Mulu and four units from Marudi constituencies.

Gerawat went on to say that if SIDS, for example, were to work with other groups or agencies, they could achieve their goals.

He urged the women’s group to teach their traditional dances and songs to the younger generation so their culture would not be lost.

“We must be proud of our culture and tradition because they are our attractions and they bind us together.”

At the function, he approved an MRP grant of RM10,000 from him and another RM5,000 from Datu Dr Penguang Manggil who is Marudi assemblyman.

The latter could not attend the function as he is overseas.
