KUCHING: Seventy-nine security guards from 21 security firms in Sarawak attended a week-long ‘Certified Security Guard 39/2016 series’ training at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) in Jalan Puncak Borneo, which ended Dec 16.

State Pulapol technical head DSP Lepi Awam said that training would be made mandatory for private security guards starting next year for the renewal of their licences to carry and handle firearms.

“The move is necessary to ensure that security companies do not arbitrarily issue firearms to any individual hired as private security guard,” he told thesundaypost yesterday.

“The Home Ministry, Security Service Association Malaysia and the police encourage security guards to attend the course in order to raise their proficiency level and to ensure that they can carry out their duties more effectively.

He said the CSG training would benefit those security guards manning banks, escorting money to banks by armoured vehicles and those guarding goldsmith shops as they were most vulnerable to criminal threats.

“The CSG training sharpens your discipline, boost your confidence, and make you a decisive person who is also mentally and physically strong.”

Lepi added that the Certified Security Guard training and certificate were commissioned by the Royal Malaysian Police.

On the handling of firearms, he reminded security guards to be carefull at all times and only to use the weapon in very critical situation.
