NSJA health campaigns net 30 pints for Miri Blood Bank
MIRI: Northern Sarawak Journalists Association’s (NSJA) health and safety, and blood donation campaigns net 30 pints of blood for the blood bank here.
Held at Bintang Megamall on Dec 17 and 18, the event also saw booths being set up by the local Fire and Rescue Dept, Miri Hospital and the local branch of Malaysian Diabetes Association to provide free health screening to members of the public.
Personnel of Fire and Rescue Dept meanwhile gave a talk on the importance of health and safety and the roles they are playing.
NSJA president Thng Joo Hua said: “The public may not necessary understand what these agencies are facing to fulfil their duty. The truth is, they are the front-liners, risking their lives to fulfil their duties and responsibilities.
“Hence, through this campaign, we are giving the opportunity to the public to learn and understand their work scope.”
“The work of the journalists are also health-taxing. We will thus give RM100 to each member as subsidy to have their health checked. Health is something we must not overlook.”
The blood donation campaign was meanwhile supported by Miri Blood Bank. The first 20 donors from the total 30 who came received a food packet and a packet of rice each, courtesy of Tong Seng Huat Sdn Bhd.
Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting earlier declared open the campaigns.
Fire and Rescue Dept Zone 6 chief Supt Law Poh Kiong, police chief ACP Khoo Leng Huat, Miri Hospital director Dr Jack Wong, Meritz Hotel general manager John Teo and former mayor of Miri Datuk Lawrence Lai were among those who came.
