Miri can produce top athletes, says Lee

MIRI: Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Lee Kim Shin is confident that Miri is capable and has the potential to produce sportsmen to represent both the state and country.

“Sarawak has good track record of producing successful sportsmen not only in national and regional sporting arena but also internatio­nally.

“It requires commitment, dedication and support from every parties in order to produce good athletes,” Lee said this during a courtesy call on him by Miri Division Badminton Associatio­n yesterday.

During the call, Lee was introduced to two badminton players – Wong Ling Chin and Emilia Lewi Gawong from the associatio­n who became the pride of Miri for winning top positions in two tournament­s in Langkawi.

Wong emerged as the Under13 singles champion at the Fifth Langkawi Internatio­nal Championsh­ip and second runner-up in Under-16 category in the same championsh­ip.

Wong also won the Under14 singles at Youth Open Badminton Championsh­ip.

Meanwhile, Emelia finished second in Under-12 singles at Youth Open.

Lee advised Wong and Emelia to be committed in training and told the associatio­n to give their support and guide them to be successful shuttlers.

He also advised them not to neglect their study.
