Heriot-Watt, inspiring minds
A leading name in British higher education, Heriot-Watt University offers students a variety of programmes at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Since its establishment in the 1800s, the university has received multiple accolades, affirming its excellence.
For instance, the university is ranked 27th in the UK and fourth in Scotland by the Guardian University Guide. What’s more, Heriot-Watt also placed second for Building and Town & Country Planning, and third for Accounting and Finance in the UK.
At the foundation level, HeriotWatt University Malaysia’s programme offerings consist of Foundation in Science and Foundation in Business, with the latter also offering an Actuarial Science route for students wishing to pursue the field.
“Both the foundation programmes are supported by a team of experienced and qualified lecturers specialising in preuniversity education.
“Students’ individual performance and development are continuously monitored through the university’s student learning support services, which include personal tutoring, peer-to-peer student support and continuous feedback on class assessments,” said Jasmine Low, Head of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s foundation programmes.
According to her, “The programmes emphasise the development of English literacy and academic skills. Students will learn how to use English for academic writing, conduct professional presentations and communicate confidently. What’s more, the academic courses also focus on developing students’ skills in critical thinking and teamwork whilst promoting their independent learning.”
Additionally, students also have the opportunity to experience a different style of learning.
“Enrolling in a Heriot-Watt University Malaysiafoundation programme enables students to experience a UK-benchmarked curriculum and UK style of learning and teaching from the start of their studies.
“Students are given an early exposure to independent learning and problem-based learning and teaching methods with strong emphasis on problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
“This helps to bridge the gap from the Malaysian education environment to a British style of university studies.
“It prepares our foundation students to cope with the rigours of undergraduate studies at Heriot-Watt and provides a solid base in their overall development to be successful and employable graduates in future,” Jasmine elaborated.
Another unique advantage Heriot-Watt offers students is its inter-campus transfer programme: Go Global.
Having a strong presence in three countries, namely the UK, Dubai and Malaysia, Heriot-Watt is able to provide students a truly international study experience.
Under Go Global, students can opt to transfer to their campus of choice so long as their programme is offered there.
The use of similar syllabi in all of Heriot-Watt’s campuses ensures that there is little to no academic barriers to transfer.
This campus transfer option is open to the university’s students who have completed their foundation studies and are transitioning to their undergraduate studies, as well as current undergraduate students.
The university has now opened a January 2017 intake for some of its undergraduate programmes.
This head start will give students the chance to complete their first year by August 2017, and subsequently begin their second year come September 2017.
What’s more, Heriot-Watt’s Pioneer Scholarship of up to RM 1,000 is also available for the January 2017 undergraduate intake.
For more information on the Go Global programme, as well as the programmes and scholarships offered at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, visit its campus in Putrajaya during its open days on 17 and 18 December.
