-

FIRST debuted in 2014 by ONEARTCLUB The One Academy,Fictionary returned for the 2016 edition with a brand new theme ‘Fandom’. For the exhibition, some of the best concept artists in the region illustrated their favourite game or comic characters that have inspired them to become who they are today. Curated by Illustration lecturer Liew Sio Yean, Fictionary pays tribute to the artists’ origins as their source of greatness. Fictionary combines the ‘fictional’ and ‘visionary’ through the themes of fantastic realism, visionary art, and art of the imagination to showcase and promote some of the best concept artworks by seasoned and emerging local and international artists, all the while providing an avenue to appreciate and discuss art.

At the Fictionary opening at The One Gallery, The One Academy, most of the artists who exhibited at Fictionary were there to launch the event along with the management of The One Academy.

The artists who exhibited include Tham Hoi Mun, JaroldSng, Jeremy Chong, Ivan Tao, Johnson Ting, WenjuinnPng, Rayden Chen, Lee ChakKhuen, Kael Ngu, SK Tneh, Tan Zhi Hui, Daniel Kamarudin, Chong Fei Giap, KrenzCushart, SkanSrisuwan and Kobe Sek.

A majority of these artists are graduates of The One Academy and have been known for their excellence in both their career and personal works, and have worked on many projects from commercials to games, films and animations.

Over 50 breathtaking digital print artworks or concept arts by the above artists were displayed at The One Gallery.

Inspired by artists’ favouritecharacters from games or comics, some of the artworks pay tribute to Ragnarok, Dragon Age, Ultraman, Ghost in The Shell, Transformers and Berserk, among many others.

The launching and exhibition was well-received by students, alumni and industry professionals.

Besides the main agenda, Fictionary also included other interesting activities that incorporate interactions such as round tables, talk and demos, where ideas and experiences are shared across professionals, young artists and students.

Tan Zhi Hui a.k.a. Kudaman, a talented concept artist from Passion Republic, conducted a demo session while SkanSrisuwan from Bangkok’s Studio Hive conducted a sharing session. The artworks, or concept art, are used to present the initial ideas of artists for animations, movies and video games based on brief by the commissioners, which are usually movie and game producers such as Transformers or Square Enix.

The results are proposed visuals by artists according to the commissioner’s desired setting, scene, emotions and characters for particular storylines.

As this important starting process of concept development that the audience do not get to witness often because the end products are normally animated, Fictionary provides a platform for eager audience to appreciate these amazing works of art that do not get much exposure but yet are crucial to the final outcome. From the detailed and well-thought out characters portrayed in the exhibition, The One Academy undoubtedly follows through with its ‘Masters Train Masters’ philosophy that nurtures artists to the pinnacle of creativity.
