Woman dies in evening road accident

SARIKEI: A 59-year- old female passenger was killed while her friend, the 62-year- old male driver, was unhurt after the car they were in was involved in an accident with another car at KM443 Betong/Sarikei/ Meradong Road about 13 km from here last Sunday evening.

Deputy district police chief DSP Dominic Josip, when contacted for confirmati­on, identified the deceased as Tiong Mee Chuo and the driver as Yung Pang Yii.

The fatal accident happened around 8.45pm when their car was hit by an oncoming car when they were making a turn into a junction.

Tiong, who was thrown out of the car which was virtually ripped into halves due to the impact of the collision, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics who came in an ambulance, Dominic said.

Like Yung, the driver of the other car identified as Wong Lee Hook, 40, whose car came to a halt about 100 metres from the scene of the accident, was unhurt.

Wong later that night came to the District Traffic Police Office to lodge a report on the accident.

The case is being investigat­ed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act, 1987.

Meanwhile, Sarikei Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) Station chief Suna Kaha said that on receiving a distress call at 6.50pm, they dispatched a team of seven rescuers led by PB Kilok Limpas to the scene.

On arrival at the scene 13 minutes later, he said his men attended to the seriously injured victim ( Tiong), who was thrown out about 5 metres from the car.

After handing over the injured victim to paramedics, he said his men cut the cable of the car’s battery before proceeding with other works such as moving the wreckage to the roadside to ensure safety of other road users.

They called off their operation around 9.40 pm after they had cleared the debris from the wrecked vehicles, he added.
