SARIKEI: President of Rotary Club ( RC) Sarikei, Johnny Su said that one of Rotary International’s high- priority projects was to help educate the future generation.

Speaking during a function for the club’s ‘ back to school’ project held at SJK (C) St Martin in Jakar near here last Saturday, he said that through the project, they have helped 300 students from needy families in their preparation for the upcoming 2017 school session.

The club distributed essential items like school bags, school uniforms and other necessities sponsored by Yayasan Sime Darby, Su said, thanking the foundation for supporting their project.

Since RC Sarikei was set up on May 23 this year, it has been blessed with support from various parties in serving the communities, he added, while singling out RCs from District 3310 in Malacca, Johor, Singapore, Labuan, Brunei, Sarawak and Sabah as well as corporate entities like CIMB and Sime Darby for their backing.

“Among others, through their support, we have brought light to over 30 poor families by providing them with solar-powered LED lights, a project supported by RC Kuching Central.

“We have also implemented “give back sight” projects which benefitted over 200 needy patients through the donations of eye lenses for cataract patients and pterygium gel, he said, adding that the club had also carried out public health screenings in Sarikei and Pakan.

“This is what Rotary Club is all about — fellowship and giving back to the community which is in line with Rotary International’s theme for this year which is ‘Rotary Serving Humanity’.”

Su gave assurance that the club would continue to carry out more such meaningful projects in the future.

“We are proud to be part of the club which gives us the platform to nurture, grow and spread humanitarian acts and to be of service to the community,” he said.

Among those present were Sarikei District education officer Radin Fozi Radin Abdul Rahman; RC Kuching Central immediate past president Ng Yaw Hua, board member ( public relations) Louis Wong and representatives of various schools.
