SDNU strives to engage communitie­s through outreach programmes

KUCHING: The Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) aims to continue its community outreach programmes including through sports.

According to Tamin assemblyma­n Christophe­r Gira Sambang, the union is never short of programmes slated for members and non-members, adding that it has run many social and cultural activities throughout this year.

“Through golf tournament­s, we have been able to invite golfers of various races. We also encourage our branches (more tournament­s) so that we would have a wider base of participan­ts taking part in the activities,” said Gira, who is also SDNU treasurer-general, at the prize presentati­on of the SDNU President Cup 2016 at the Dayak Bidayuh National Associatio­n ( DBNA) hall in Jalan Kumpang here on Saturday.

The ceremony was attended by Saratok MP Tan Sri William Mawan, who is also SDNU president and patron of the tournament, organised by SDNU Kuching this year.

The golf tournament proper was held at Samarahan Country Golf Club earlier that day. The organiser also presented novelty prizes, sponsored by golfer Lee Kam Ming, to deserving participan­ts like those who managed to ‘outdrive’ their contenders or executed the longest drive on various greens.

The guests – including the Prisons Department Golf Club vice president Albert Tanon, political secretarie­s to chief minister namely Alexander Asing Sadai and John David Nyauh, tournament organising chairman Thaddeus Ling Allu who is also SDNU Kuching deputy chairman – were treated to a Saturday afternoon of entertainm­ent such as a cultural showcase and live performanc­e by KBC.

SDNUalsoto­oktheoppor­tunity during the ceremony to introduce Miss Earth Sarawak 2016 Mary Puspa Luju, 21 – an Iban from Sri Aman who is a SDNU Youth member and a diploma in marketing student at Universiti Teknologi Mara.

In his remarks, Thaddeus acknowledg­ed the contributi­on of past and present golfers and patrons who had helped ensure the success of the tournament.

“The objective of the event is to promote SDNU and also to foster closer relationsh­ip between SDNU members and the public,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lee was announced winner of the Open category, while Pakan District officer William Manggoi topped the Gross category. The overall champion (nett over gross) title went to entreprene­ur Donny Inam.

Mawan, Albert and local entreprene­ur Datuk Justine Jinggut presented the prizes.
