MIRI: Residents of Taman Lopeng Baru Phase 1 (near Miri Hospital) want Miri City Council ( MCC) to take swift action to resolve the frequent floods in the residential area.

When contacted by The Borneo Post, a resident, Kelvin Tan, said the flood had become worse since the commencement of the Taman Lopeng Baru Phase 2 project near the area.

“The Phase 2 project commenced in 2013, and since then whenever there is incessant rain, water from the higher ground will flow down to my residential area that is at a lower ground.

“Initially, it only filled up the drain but now it has become worse because the water flows out

of the drain and floods almost the whole road.

“People may not understand our concern. If the matter is left unsolved, it may become worse, with more water flowing down and into our houses,” Tan pointed out.

The father- of- one who works as a freelancer in drafting and architectural design said the contractor should have taken into consideration the water flow in their drainage system design.

“Ignorance of the details will only cause trouble to yourself and to other people,” he said in disappointment.

Yesterday, a downpour occurred at the area for about two hours, which the freelancer said was already enough to flood the drains.

“I cannot imagine if the rain pours for days. We are worried and hope to seek cooperation from the developer and city council to solve the problem,” he told The Borneo Post.
