SIBU: The grassroots leaders of Sarawak United People’s Party ( SUPP) are urged to be more proactive and ever-ready to serve the people in their respective areas.

Speaking at a Christmas dinner for about 500 SUPP members and supporters at Sungai Sadit on Sunday, SUPP Bawang Assan chairman Robert Lau Hui Yew reminded them of the need to work tirelessly and selflessly for the people.

He said the grassroots leaders included councillors of Sibu Rural District Council, of which he is the deputy chairman.

He said as representatives of SUPP, the oldest party in Sarawak, they should always be exemplary and always uphold the good name of the party.

The party has 11 councillors in SRDC.

Lau, who is also the Barisan Nasional (BN) Sibu Parliamentary Seat coordinator, noted with delight the solving of many problems the people in the Bawang Assan area faced over the past several years.

To the people, he expected them to rally behind the BN state government to consolidate its strength.

He also urged the people to be caring and forgiving.

“This is the first Christmas gathering we’re having and I hope more festive events like this will be held in future where people of different races and backgrounds are gathered together to achieve the goal of greater unity and social cohesion,” Lau said.
