Catholics start house carolling

-

KAPIT: Catholics from Holy Mary Immaculate Conception Church here have begun their nightly pre- Christmas house-tohouse carolling to bring festive cheer to Catholic families in and around this town and its outskirts.

On Dec 18, the carolling group led by Father Mathew Oli li brought cheer to Catholic families around Jalan Airport and Jalan Bletih and on Dec 19 they spread the Good News to Cathol ic families along Jalan Selirik and Jalan Sungai Ulu Selirik. Catholic families in Kapit town welcomed the carollers on Dec 20 while on Dec 21 the carollers were at Rumah Manok Mancha along Jalan Ulu Sungai Yong.

The Christmas Eve Mass will be held on the evening of this Saturday ( Dec 24).

Meanwhile, various churches here are seeing increased activities in conjunction with the Christmas celebration.

The Association of Sarawak Churches Kapit branch held the combined Christmas service on Dec 10 while the Christmas procession was on Dec 11.

Although Kapit is a predominant ly Chr i s t ian community, this year the mood of celebration is slow to heat up.

Unlike previous years when express boats ferried thousands of people to the town on their way to their longhouses to celebrate Christmas and New Year Day, there had been no additional boat trips so far this year.

Shopkeepers observed that the volume of business had not increased.

Perhaps one of the reasons is the economic slowdown, making people having less to spend.

Another reason might be the reopening of school soon as parents need to save for ‘back to school’ expenses.
