MIRI: The IG Training Centre Sdn Bhd (IGTC) – a homegrown training company for the oil and gas (O&G) industry – is inviting current and aspiring offshore workers to enrol in its safety courses, approved by Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation (Opito).

According to IGTC managing director Joseph Kong, the centre also has certification from Petronas to conduct safety training for O&G workers.

“Such credentials ensure that the workers would be competent and able to operate at the industry’s highest standards and recognised by Petronas alongside other major players such as Shell, Nippon Oil and Halliburton,” he said in a recent statement.

Opito is an industry-owned, non-profit standardisation organisation based in Aberdeen, UK, which has been operating for more than 30 years. Its objective is to deliver the needs of the global O&G industry by ensuring a supply of competent workforce.

Kong said while being assessed on safety and technical aspects, Opito-approved IGTC allows trainees to experience real-life situations through courses like the basic offshore safety induction emergency training, safe travel via boat and helicopter, underwater escape training, as well as tropical basic offshore safety induction emergency training.

He explained these courses were the prerequisites for aspiring offshore workers – even before they step into a helicopter or on board a boat bound for the oil platform.

For current offshore workers, there are also the refresher courses such as further offshore emergency training, further offshore emergency training and travel safety on boat and further tropical offshore emergency training with emergency breathing system.

In addition, the centre also offers the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH)-approved basic, intermediate and advanced scaffolding programmes.

“Competency plays an evergrowing role in ensuring that the O&G industry improves its safety aspects and operational efficiency, in which IGTC would continue to ensure that the delivery of these courses would meet Opito standards and approvals by its team of qualified instructors.”

IGTC was incorporated in 2013 with the primary objective of providing the highest quality and realistic safety training for personnel working in the petroleum industries.

Located at Lot 11619 of Block 5 at Jalan Jati 2C in Desa Senadin here, the centre is equipped with purpose-built state-ofthe-art facilities and equipment comprising a three-storey administrative block that houses a reception counter, lobby, offices, resource centre, prayer rooms for Muslim personnel and trainees, a cafeteria that serves halal food, as well as eight well-equipped training rooms.

In addition, there is also a training pool for survival training, a helicopter simulator, a lifeboat launching facility which includes a life boat, lifeboat launching structure and pool, a firefighting training facility, facilities for various safety training like forklift, rigging and slinging, crane operating, scaffolding and a parking area with over 100 lots.
