Australians urged to report suspicious activities following foiled terror plot

-

CANBERRA: The Australian government has asked people to be on alert this festive season, urging locals to report any suspicious activity in the wake of a foiled terror plot earlier this week, China’s Xihua news agency reported.

Late on Friday, Australia’s Attorney-General George Brandis released a statement reminding Australians about the National Security Hotline, a service in which people can call and report suspicious activity.

The statement follows a foiled terror plot which would have occurred in Melbourne on Christmas Day, and Brandis said it was important for everyone to be vigilant while enjoying the festive season.

“In the wake of one of Australia’s most substantial terror plot disruptions in recent years, the Turnbull government is reminding Australians to report suspicious and unusual behaviour,” Brandis said late Friday.

He said the hotline was a vital tool in helping the government keep Australians safe, explaining that 12 plots had been disrupted in the last two years.

“Since September 2014, Australia has experienced four terror-related attacks and 12 major disruptions of imminent attack planning. This is a testament to the exemplary work and dedication of our security agencies and the vigilance of the Australian public,” Brandis said.

“I thank the Australian people for partnering with us to keep our community safe.” — Bernama
