SIBU: The Christmas weekend here was marred with two road tragedies, where a man and woman were killed in separate accidents.

The first occurred at 1am on Sunday at KM62 Sibu-Bintulu Road near Selangau town, where a man was driving his wife home on a branch road leading to an oil palm plantation.

It is believed that the 57-year- old driver suddenly lost control of the car, which then plunged down a slope.

There was no witness to the accident.

Upon being informed about the incident, the son of the couple rushed to the scene, where members of the public helped him get his parents out of the wrecked car before sending them to Selangau Clinic.

It is reported that the driver was killed on site.

Mukah police and Fire and Rescue Department personnel rushed over to the scene but they failed to find it, as there was no street lighting along the branch road.

Another tragic accident occurred on same day at 7.30pm, where an unidentified man was killed in what police believed was a hit- and-run near Dudong roundabout at the road between Sibu Jaya and Durin Bridge.

Sibu police chief ACP Saiful Bahri confirmed the case.

It is believed that the victim was walking along the road when he was run over by a car.

The body had been sent to Sibu Hospital mortuary.

On the case, Saiful called for any witness who might have seen the car or know some details about the accident to help in police probe into the case.
