60 attend organic vegetable planting course in Limbang

-

LIMBANG: Planting organic vegetables in house compounds is becoming a popular activity in this division, prompting even the divisional office of the Youth, Sports and Solidarity Ministry to organise courses for those interested in this activity.

A course on planting organic vegetables in polythene bags was held recently at the Limbang Indoor Stadium, attracting over 60 participants.

An officer from the ministry’s office here, Latipah Yusop said the ministry took the initiative to conduct the course in view of the popularity of planting organic vegetables so as to help increase the income of the growers.

Course facilitator Awang Othman Awang Hamsawi said planting organic vegetables had many benefits.

“Firstly, organic vegetables are good for health, while gardening is a healthy hobby and free exercise. Meanwhile, the vegetables could be planted for personal consumption or for sale to earn extra income.

“Organic vegetable planting can be carried out at any small space in the house, even using recycled pots or plastic bottles which can be hung on fences to beautify the compound,” he said.

Awang Othman said following the principles of organic farming, garden pests could be minimised even without the use of pesticide.

Limbang deputy district officer Hamidah Halpi officiated at the closing ceremony for the course and later, presented certificates to participants.
