‘Strictly adhere to traffic rules to reduce congestion’
SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council ( SMC) has urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules in order to reduce traffic congestion in the central business district (CBD) area.
Speaking when chairing a full council meeting yesterday, its chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said illegal parking could be reduced if everyone exercised consideration.
This year alone, a total of 5,492 compounds were issued for illegal parking in the town area, he said.
He said the council had organised more than 20 meetthe-people sessions and about 400 requests and suggestions were recorded for further actions.
He said such sessions were platforms to encourage twoway communication between SMC councillors and the people in their respective zones.
“The council has met about 70 per cent of the 400 requests and suggestions,” he said.
Tiong also said the council had received RM600,000 in allocations from the federal government this year for the implementation of initiatives under the Safe City programme. He said the council was working very closely with the police and other government departments and agencies as well as nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) for the programme.
Among the initiatives are installation of 110 closedcircuit televisions (CCTVs) at the Urban Transformation Centre ( UTC) in Lembangan multi- storey car park and installation of bollards to segregate pedestrians from motor vehicles.
“The council has erected 81 new street lights costing RM324,943 and installed safe mirrors at turns and strategic locations,” he added.
He also urged the local community to join the opening ceremony of ‘Visit Sibu Year ( VSY) 2017’ on Dec 31 at Sibu Town Square.
“Next year, we will have 12 major events and many side activities in conjunction with VSY 2017.
“We hope everyone will help to promote the local culture, local delicacies and places of interest through social media and broadcast channels,” he said, adding that Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh would officiate at the opening of VSY 2017.
