Action on 18 rogue cases, out of 412 cheap sales — Ministry

SIBU: A total of 412 cheap sale permits were approved here this year, with action taken against 18 cases without a sale permit.

Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism ( KPDNKK) Sibu branch chief Kasim Mana said seizure from the 18 cases amounted to RM28,630.

“It is an offence to hold a cheap sale without applying for permit,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday, saying it infringed the Trade Descriptions Act 2011.

He said the Act compelled traders to ensure 70 per cent of the items in their premises were put on sale when rolling out a cheap sale.

“Both the old and new prices (after discount) must be indicated to keep consumers informed,” he added.

He cautioned that failure to do so constituted an offence under Trade Descriptions Act 2011.

“An offender is liable to a penalty of not more than RM100,000 for flouting the Act.”

On another matter, Kasim reminded traders not to take advantage of the situation as parents rush to prepare their children for the new school term.

He said traders must not hike prices of school uniforms, shoes and stationery.

At several departmental stores and supermarkets here yesterday, parents were seen purchasing school items for their children as the new school term reopens in a couple of days.

Meanwhile, Kasim reiterated a call for members of the public to be the ‘eyes and ears’ of the ministry and report unhealthy business practices.

For enquiries, call the ministry’s hotline 1 800 886 800 or office number 084- 329202. Or, drop complaints at e-aduan@ kpdnkk. gov.my.
