It is not very healthy even without any legislation being put int effect. Sometimes, these dogs are dirty – they might bring some sort of diseases and so forth, to these public places.

SIBU: Operators of eateries are reminded to ensure that pets are not brought into their premises, and also to keep stray dogs and cats out.

According to Assistant Minister for Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil, the Cleanliness By- Law does not allow this towards ensuring the cleanliness of the eateries and the wellbeing of the public.

The stray animals could become an eyesore to some coffee shop patrons, he said.

“It is not very healthy even without any legislation being put int effect. Sometimes, these dogs are dirty – they might bring some sort of diseases and so forth, to these public places,” he told The Borneo Post.

Penguang said this when asked whether action could be taken against operators of eateries where stray dogs and cats were spotted roaming around. Adding on, he said the onus fell on the operators to ensure the cleanliness of their

premises, including its toilets. He believed that patrons would have second thought about dining at dirty public eateries.

“So, to me, it is simple common sense – if they want to maintain cleanliness of their coffee shops, they should avoid bring in these animals.”

Separately, Penguang who is Marudi assemblyman urged operators to fit their sinks with strainers or grease traps to prevent food waste from being channelled into drains.

He pointed out that operators were supposed to use grease traps to prevent outflow of food and particles into main drains and public places to avoid pollution and clogging the drains. Penguang also reminded operators against dumping used cooking oil into drains, pointing out that this was against the Cleanliness By-Law. This was because such action would not only pollute the environment, but could also cause drain blockage.
