Bukit Melapi dump site to solve indiscriminate disposal of garbage into Sungai Ngemah

-

KANOWIT: The proposed new dumping ground near Bukit Melapi in Sungai Ngemah here would provide the solution to indiscriminate disposal of garbage by the people in the area.

Kanowit District Council (KDC) Councillor Lakun Laga said this was good news especially to the residents of 26 longhouses at Nanga Ngungun Resettlement Area, the majority of whom, had to throw their household waste into Sungai Ngemah.

“The people are forced to do so because they have no other alternatives to dispose of their household waste other than using the river as dumping ground. I hope the new site would end such actions against Mother Nature,” he told The Borneo Post when met recently.

According to Lakun, the land for the 10- acre dumping ground was approved recently. He said KDC in its meeting last month had agreed that works on the dump site would start as soon as the construction of Kanowit Bridge reached completion in June this year.

Meanwhile, Lakun said the Chinese community at Nanga Ngemah bazaar as well as longhouse residents from Nanga Ngungun, Teluk Jambu, Baluh Ili and surrounding areas could now enjoy a smoother ride to Kanowit town with the completion of Ngungun/Poi Road.

He said the road project was fully completed after works to tarseal the remaining 2km stretch of the 14km road was done before Christmas last week.

“We are thankful to the government that in Nanga Ngungun now many longhouses have cemented pathway from the main road right to their doorsteps. We are looking forward to more opportunities that would come after the Kanowit Bridge is completed,” he said.
