Catholic High School wins Christmas tree decoration contest
SIBU: Catholic High School was adjudged champion of the ‘Christmas Tree Decoration Contest 2016’ beating 11 other educational institutions here to pocket the grand prize of RM1,000.
The results were announced during the New Year countdown cum Visit Sibu Year ( VSY) 2017 opening ceremony at Sibu Town Square Phase I on Saturday night.
Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh officiated at both events.
SMK Sacred Heart and Woodlands International School came second and third, walking home with RM750 and RM500 respectively.
The consolation prize winners - University College of Technology Sarawak ( UCTS), SM Wong Nai Siong, SMK Kampung Nangka, SMK Methodist, SM Guong Ming, SM Citizen, SM Kiang Hin, Methodist Pilley Institute and SMK St Elizabeth - each received RM150.
At the same function, the Community Development Award was also given out to UCTS, JCI Sibu, Farley Supermarket and Wisma Sanyan. Speaking at the function, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said Sibu was still a vibrant town with a steady economy coupled with active social and cultural activities.
“Our community lives in a peaceful and safe urban environment although we have isolated criminal cases. Although we face many challenges in the past year, we are able to make Sibu a comfortable home, where our community can live, work and rest,” Tiong said.
Touching on the New Year, he said it was a day of resolutions, where everyone made their own resolutions for a happier, healthier and better life.
“I sincerely hope we can all work together irrespective of racial, religious and political backgrounds, with a new resolution to make our homes and our state and nation a better place to live in. Everyone in Sibu should stand united as a cohesive community in facing the challenges ahead,” Tiong said.
On VSY 2017, he said it was themed ‘Heartland of Borneo’ and urged all stakeholders to make the tourism event a success.
