Conference in Ohio aims to highlight Malaysia’s profile on world stage
SIBU: The University of Ohio’s Tun Abdul Razak Chair, in collaboration with the university’s Office of Global Affairs and International Studies and its Department of Political Science, will be hosting an international conference ‘ Malaysia and the World: Cross- Regional Perspectives on Race, Religion and Ethnic Identity’ from March 24 to 26 at Athens, Ohio, in the US.
According to Prof Jayum Jawan – a Sarawakian who is currently serving as the 15th Tun Abdul Razak Chair and a visiting professor of political science at the university – the conference aims to highlight Malaysia’s profile and its role on the world stage by bringing together key scholars from Malaysia, Europe and North America.
“The intellectual academic exchange will provide a venue for competing comparative perspectives on globally relevant topics. It is the broader intention that this academic activism will benefit and enrich Malaysian studies around the globe,” he said in a press statement yesterday.
He said the highlights of the conference would be keynote addresses by Prof Datuk Shamsul

Amri Baharuddin of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the National Council of Professors, who will speak on ‘ The Making of Malaysia’s National Unity Blueprint: Redefining Unity in Malaysia’; Universiti Putra Malaysia vice- chancellor Prof Datin Paduka Aini Ideris who will touch on the role of research universities in nation- building; Donald L Horowitz who serves as the James B Duke Professor of Law and Political Science Emeritus at Duke University; Prof Meredith Weiss of Rockefeller College of Public Affairs, State University of New York at Albany ; Universiti Utara Malaysia vice- chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak who will addresses the theme ‘ Electoral Politics’; Jemoreng assemblyman and former Perlis Mufti Dato Dr Juanda Jaya who will speak on a subject that addresses the theme ‘Islam, The State and Law’; UPM visiting professor at Wailalak University in Thailand, Prof Ahmad Tarmizi Talib who will deliver his points on ‘Muslim–NonMuslim Relations in Malaysia’; Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s (Unimas) Prof Stanley Bye Kadam Kiai who will talk about ‘ The Politics of Federalism: Reflecting on the Role Sarawak and Sabah Played in the Formation of Malaysia’.
Jayum himself will touch on ‘Race and Ethnic Relations: What Malaysia and the US Can Learn from Each Other’.
The conference is open to all, especially local scholars.
