Singers urged to showcase their talents in public places
MIRI: Youths with beautiful voices and those who can sing should not suppress their talent. Instead they should take advantage of their ability to perform or sing in public places.
Assistant Minister for Land and Air Transportation and Safety, Datuk Lee Kim Shin said many people can sing very well but not all of them are keen to showcase their talents in public.
“Some only dare to sing at home or in the shower, but if they have the talent, they should participate in singing competitions so that their talent can be discovered,” he said in his address when officiating at the Super Singer Competition 2017 at Boulevard Commercial Centre yesterday.
“This is an initiative of the organiser which is not only aimed at polishing talents of local youths, but also to scout talents among youths from outside Sarawak,” he said.
Citing Malaysian singer Shila Amzah who spread her wings to China as an example, Lee hoped local singers here could be just as bold to make their name internationally.
“We hope this Super Singer competition can produce more local artistes who have potential to perform at public events,” he said.
Lee, who is also Assistant Minister for Tourism, said apart from promoting tourism destinations here, various activities that can attract tourists should also be organised regularly.
Among them, he added, were singing competitions which not only involve participants from Miri, but also from Brunei Darussalam, Sabah as well as other areas near the city.
He said Mirians can also promote their culture and arts to outsiders apart from popular tourism destinations here such as Miri beaches, Niah caves, and Mulu National Park which is a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Also present at the event were Super Singer’s organising chairman Steven Hii and Lee’s special aide, Eric Chin.
More than 100 local singers, including those from outside Miri took part in the two- day competition which ends today.
