Benih Parents to hold first-aid class next

-

KUCHING: Benih Parents was founded by two young mothers who have a passion for finding out the facts about pregnancy and childcare to ensure their little ones are healthy, safe and happy.

Patsy Lam and Sharon Tan, the founders, realised that no amount of reading or YouTube videos can compare to hands- on training guided by experts.

As these classes are only available on a limited basis in Kuching, they decided to set up Benih Parents to organise Kuching- based antenatal, childcare classes and social events for parents and other caregivers.

They have organised a few classes so far, including ‘ Messy Sensory Play Workshop’ with Sue Walker from The Therapy Playroom and a talk on ‘Why and How to set up a Will’ by lawyer Grace Yong.

Their next project, together with the Malaysian Red Crescent ( MRC), aims to prepare one person in every household as a first-aider.

This is especially so with children in the house and a trained first- aider will give the family more peace of mind.

Tan said that she recently received a message from her babysitter about a woman who found a ‘ miraculous cure’ for burns, namely flour.

“She advised us to keep a bag of flour in the fridge, ready to be used if someone suffers a burn,” she said.

Curious, Tan asked her maid what she would do for burns.

“Her answer? Rub butter on the burn.”

Both of these ‘remedies’ are in fact myths that can make matters worse.

“Everyone should know the basics that can minimise damage or even save a life until medical help arrives,” Tan said.

‘A First Aider in Every Home’ is a six-hour workshop that will take place in two three- hour sessions on Jan 14 and 21, from 9am to 12pm. It will be held at the MRC HQ.

The fees are RM100 per person and will include refreshments and training materials. Places are limited so contact Patsy at 012- 2382967 or Sharon ( 0122381124) to book now.
