MACC to enhance use of IBI, focus on public sector, government-linked companies, banks
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti- Corruption Commission (MACC) will enhance the use of Intelligence Based Investigation (IBI) in an effort to curb corruption in the public sector, government linked companies (GLCs) and the banking institution.
Deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Azam Baki said IBI is proactive and proven in cases such as Ops Water in Sabah, Ops Bauxite in Pahang and the embezzling of over RM100 million of government funds by a senior official of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
“Not many agencies in the world use IBI. The IBI method enables the officers to start intelligence work. This will facilitate the investigation.
“Without intelligence work, the MACC could not have exposed Ops Water in Sabah which led to the recovery of the largest stash of cash in history,” he said in an exclusive interview in ‘Slot Tetamu Khas’ of MACCfm yesterday.
Azam said starting this year, the MACC will focus on IBI in the public sector, GLCs and the banking insitution.
“Focus will be on law enforcement and procurement agencies as they have a high propensity for corruption and leakages of public funds.”
Azam, who was appointed as deputy commissioner (operations) in October said corruption in the public sector is serious and must be addressed.
“A professor from United Kingdom told me that corruption in the public sector is still a major issue in the UK. This is a developed country. Malaysia, which has not reached developed nation status must address corruption in the public sector, GLCs and the banking institution.”
He warned top and senior government officials at federal and state level who often play gold abroad to stop such activities. — Bernama
