MIRI: The Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) here is preparing for the floods by getting ready its land and air logistics including helicopter for deployment.

Head of Zone 6, Senior Superintendent 1 ( PgKB1) Law Poh Kiong said all personnel were now on standby to be deployed for monitoring and rescue tasks.

“A total of 25 members have been instructed to get ready on any shifts and all logistics facilities have also been prepared, including the use of helicopters to monitor and review the f lood situation, if required,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday, adding that leave applications from his staff were frozen.

Law said every flood- prone area would be monitored by the fire stations in Miri and Marudi.

He also said floods in Miri and Niah would be monitored through the Disaster Operations Centre ( PKOB) here.

“PKOB will collect all information from each agency and the agency will move according to the situation, including the transfer and rescue operations,” he said.

He advised people living in low- lying areas to be cautious of rising water levels.

“For those who live near the river, we advise them to constantly monitor the rise of water levels and to be ready to be evacuated if instructed,” he said, adding that residents need to keep their important documents safe and contact the District Office, the Police and Bomba if the water level rises dramatically.

In a recent statement, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi advised all the people in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Sabah and Sarawak to prepare for the possibility of flooding.
