46 booked for traffic offences in 4 days
SIBU: Forty-six individuals were booked by Road Transport Department (JPJ) for various traffic offences during a New Year operation from Dec 30 last year until Jan 2.
Its state assistant director (enforcement) Albert Clement said yesterday the summonses were issued on the spot.
“The majority of summonses issued were for expired road tax and driving licences involving cars and motorcycles.
“Driving with expired road tax constitutes an offence under Section 23 of the Road Transport Act 1987, where upon conviction, an offender is liable to a fine not exceeding RM2,000.
“In the case of an expired driving licence, it contravenes Section 26 of the same Act, which is compoundable up to RM300 or upon conviction, an offender shall be liable for a fine not exceeding RM2,000 or imprisonment not exceeding three months, or both,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday, pointing out that the operation was a nationwide exercise.
Albert was responding to a query on the number of cases taken up during the just concluded New Year operation.
He also said expired road tax cases would be referred directly to court because it involved expired insurance.
He said the operation targeted all types of road vehicles, including drivers of private vehicles.
JPJ personnel were stationed at road junctions to snap photographs of drivers who beat traffic lights, overtook at double lines or used handphones while driving, he added.
Meanwhile, during a recent three- day Christmas operation from Dec 24– 26, JPJ recorded 135 cases, 65 per cent of them involving motorcyclists, he said.
He said JPJ enforcement units were also stationed at bus terminals in Kuching, Sibu and Miri to check on express buses, including their roadworthiness.
“At express bus terminals, JPJ collaborated with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) to conduct urine tests on drivers and second drivers,” he said.
