China’s top puppeteers to perform in Kuching

KUCHING: The Federation of Chinese Associatio­ns of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions will hold the ‘Cultures of China – Festival of Spring’ cultural performanc­e on Jan 16 in connection with the Lunar New Year.

To be held from 7pm to 10.30pm at Kuching Imperial Hotel, the event is supported by the ConsulateG­eneral of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching.

Federation of Chinese Associatio­ns of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions president Datuk Richard Wee said the event will feature a 40-member troupe from Sichuan Puppet Theatre.

“The troupe represents the highest standard of puppet performanc­e from China. They have toured dozens of regions and countries playing the diplomatic role of cultural envoy to promote cultural exchange and foster closer relationsh­ips and peace among the people of different countries.

“Their performanc­e will be a fresh experience for the locals here,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Event organising chairman and federation vice-president Pemanca Ko Wai Neng said the Sichuan Puppet Theatre troupe will have several Asian stops.

“They will start performing in Japan before their performanc­e in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 14. After their performanc­e in Kuching on Jan 16, they will be heading to Sibu on Jan 18 prior to their journey back to China.

“The performanc­e promises to be a world-class event, showcasing life- sized puppet dances, stunts, martial arts and others that will guarantee to charm the audience,” he said.

The programme for the evening will also include singing performanc­es, Chinese Tea Rhyme, Sichuan Opera and acrobatics.

Free tickets on a first- come, first- served basis are available from the federation on weekdays between 9am and 12pm, as well as between 2pm and 4pm.

The performanc­e venue has a maximum seating capacity of 2,000.
