Same laws but police cam on bridge pic ‘not from here’

-

KUCHING: A photograph – showing two traffic policemen with cameras on the overhead bridge on enforcement duty – that has gone viral on Facebook, was not taken in Malaysia.

This was confirmed by state Traffic Enforcement and Investigations chief Supt Mohamad Sarie Fauzi, who said Malaysians were also prohibited from using the handphone while driving but enforcement was not quite the same as portrayed in the photo.

According to Sarie, his department has yet to carry out any similar operation as being done in Singapore – with enforcement officers setting up cameras on the overhead bridge.

He added that road users in the state who were caught using handphone would be captured by the speed trap cameras.

Sarie said drivers who were caught red-handed for using handphone while travelling on the road would be fined RM300.

For the time being, he said traffic police still focused on eradicating six major offences, which have been determined as contributing factors to road accidents.

The offences were speeding, not complying with the traffic lights, overtaking on double line, queue jumping, on the handphone while driving and using emergency lane (in Peninsular Malaysia only), he added.

Meanwhile, the Facebook post ‘warned’ road users of the ‘new’ enforcement by traffic police and even listing two time slots.

The post added that the operation would last for 60 days besides advising netizens to ‘spread (the news) in order to avoid penalty’.
