MIRI: Road users are advised to be careful when using the MiriMarudi road as the improvement works are still on-going.

The 44km Marudi Road Rehabilitation Project, costing RM77.4 million which started in Nov last year and is expected to be completed by May 2019, will be tar-sealed, widened and will have proper drainage particularly in low-lying areas.

“I understand currently the condition (of the road) is not that good especially where they (the contractors) are not doing it yet but I was informed that they have put the gravels at the first few kilometres from Miri junction going in. As for the three steep areas, they are lowering the slope to below 15 per cent. These works are all on-going and the road will be messy and the condition is not very good,” Assistant Minister for Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil told The Borneo Post recently.

According to Penguang, the contractor has completed the clearing of the road verge for the drain after Sungai Arang bridge to the Marudi ferry point.

“I was made to understand by the contractor that they have identified the site for the 21 culverts, from Sungai Arang right to the ferry point.

He said CMS Roads Sdn Bhd will give out the specs or types of culverts to be used so there will be no stagnant water once the work is done.

By end of this year, he added, the contractor is expected to tar-seal at least 17 km of the stretch from the Miri junction.

“My advice to road users is to bear with us as currently the road condition is not good and please drive carefully,” he said, adding that the 228 safety road signs along the Miri-Marudi road were put up in good faith to alert road users on the road condition.

Penguang, who is also Marudi assemblyman, mentioned that three work zone teams were working concurrently and priority was given to slopes and low-lying areas.
