Turning angpow packets into costumes

MIRI: Every Chinese New Year, the many used and unused red packets or angpow pose a problem as to how to dispose them.

One solution to this problem is turning them into costumes.

This is what participants of ‘ Young God of Prosperity’, a creative art contest, exactly did at the Miri Trade Fair ( Mitraf13) last weekend, an event organised by Miri See Hua Marketing and sponsored by Carrie Junior.

It was fascinating to see stacks of angpow packets being turned into beautiful costumes, which won applause from the audience.

“I did not count the time and the number of red packets I used to make this costume. I only think of the design I want to make and making sure that I achieve it,” a mother who declined to be named said while busy clipping the costume worn by her daughter.

It was not hard to figure that the design is not merely a costume as it resembles the image of god of prosperity and goddesses that relate to Chinese beliefs.

The contestants comprised children, aged seven to 15 years, wearing costumes made from angpow packets by their creative parents.

They showcased their costumes on the stage, performing to the tune of the music.

Yong Yee bagged the champion’s trophy, along with RM200 cash prize and a certificate, beating other contestants to get the highest points.

Teng Huan Kee and Chong Mei Foon were in second and third place respectively. Each received a trophy, a certificate and RM150 and RM100 cash prize respectively.
