Two trainees from PDK Kapit to undergo training in Samarahan

-

KAPIT: Two trainees at Community-based Rehabilitation Centre ( PDK) Kapit have been selected to undergo vocational training at PDK Samarahan near Kuching.

This comes after much effort was made PDK Kapit to get its trainees who are people with special needs (OKU) to be sent to the PDK for vocational training.

They are a 15-year- old boy, Dublin Clinet, who has been selected to attend a computer course, and a 29-year old woman, Intan Lusing, who will take up a tailoring course.

Both Dublin and Intan are considered the two lucky trainees because they were selected from among 49 trainees at PDK Kapit.

Welfare Officer in charge of PDK Kapit, Azizul Jumli, escorted the duo to Kuching last Sunday. Also accompanying them were PDK Kapit staff member Ngaji Dukit and Dublin’s parents.

At Kapit Terminal to send off Dublin and Intan were PDK Kapit adviser Evelyn Biju, PDK Kapit management committee chairperson Moonly Tiang, supervisor Ting Bee Eng and family members and friends of the trainees.

Evelyn, who was the prime mover in recommending the trainees to receive vocational training, wished them all the best and hoped to see them succeed in whatever field they pursue for a better tomorrow.

“This is a proud moment for us, PDK Kapit, because for the first time we are able to send two of our OKU trainees to PDK Samarahan to receive vocational training,” she said.

On a related matter, she believed that there were many more people with special needs not registered with the PDK because of the remoteness of their longhouses which made it difficult for their parents to send them to the centre.

PDK Kapit is a day- care centre that opens from Mondays to Thursdays while Friday is family visit day for the trainees to interact with their parents and other members of their family.

PDK Samarahan was set up to provide habitation services which also include healthcare and vocational training to some 100 OKU per intake so that they can be productive and independent.
