Duo attempt to kidnap woman to pay off debts to loan shark

-

SUNGAI BULOH: Two men’s attempt to kidnap a woman for ransom to pay off their debts to an Ah Long ( loan shark) was in vain as they were arrested after the van they used for the purpose skidded, crashed into a tree and caught fire at Batu 15, Sungai Pelong here on Tuesday.

In the 6.30 pm incident, the 28year-old victim, who is a manager of a curtain factory, was driving home when she was abducted by the duo in front of an international school in Sierramas.

Sungai Buloh Police chief Supt Dr Abdul Aziz Awang Darus said the victim was with her maid in her BMW car when the two men approached them and pulled her out of the car and into the white van, leaving the maid behind.

“The suspects then sped off towards Jalan Kuala Selangor.

“Along the way, the victim was seen struggling and screaming for help, attracting the attention of concerned motorists who then gave chase to the van.

“Realising that they were being chased, the suspects pulled over near a supermarket in Sungai Buloh and left the victim there,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Abdul Aziz said the suspects then fled the area towards Sungai Pelong before the van skidded, crashed into a tree and caught fire.

“As soon as they got out of the van, they were beaten up by the motorists before police came and arrested them,” he said.

He said initial investigation found that the suspects had suffered gambling losses and needed money to pay off their debts to the loan shark.

They had been observing the woman, who is also the curtain factory owner’s daughter, for a month before finally made the attempt to kidnap her for ransom, Abdul Aziz said.

“Police also seized a machete, knife, cash of over RM2,000, a coil of rope, a ransom note and a luggage from the suspects.

“The white van with a fake registration number plate was reported stolen in Jinjang,” he said, adding that both the suspects, who are in their 20s, had been remanded for four days to facilitate further investigations under Section 365 of the Penal Code. — Bernama
