Kuching set for inaugural Ultra Marathon in April

KUCHING: Petra Jaya Ultra Running Club wil l organise the inaugural Kuching Ultra Marathon on April 1- 2 to raise funds for the club and awareness for Ultra Running among runners in Kuching.

Its secretary Awang Saifeluddi­n Awangku Karim said the event is especially for runners looking to upgrade, having completed the 42.195 km marathon.

He noted that ultra marathons have been held in Peninsular Malaysia such as the TITI 100 in Hulu Langat, Penang Ultra in George Town,Langkawi Ultra in Langkawi and Putrajaya 100km during the press conference­s held at Youth and Sport Complex at Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce here yesterday.

“As we start to have more Ultra Runners from Sarawak we believe this initiative will encourage more joining Ultra Road Marathon in Kuching,” he added.

The race director is Shannon Francis Bala, a veteran of eight ultra marathons and 26 ful l marathons in Malaysia and overseas.

Shannon is also the f irst Sarawakian to attempt and complete a 160km ultra marathon event.

Awang announced that the event will feature the 50 and 70 km categories and target 400 participan­ts.

“The route will be from Old Court House, then passing through MBKS, BCCK, Medan Hamidah, DBKU and back to China House where it ends,” he added.

The event is supported by the Youth and Sports Department. Its deputy director Daniel Batin was also present at the press conference.
