MYBiomass, API in JDA to produce sugars from oil palm EFBs
KUALA LUMPUR: MYBiomass Sdn Bhd and American Process Inc (API) have announced a jointdevelopment work (JDA) for the production of nanocellulose and cellulosic sugars from oil palm empty fruit-bunches (EFBs) into material as enhancing additives in textile, paper, and automotive parts amongst others.
In a statement, MyBiomass said it would fund the JDA and harness its strength in oil palm biomass supply, technology adaptation, market development, and combine them with API’s technical and material development expertise.
“This is in- line with the Malaysian Biomass Initiative as it addresses the potential of moving up the value-chain, promotes sustainable feedstock supply, and shifts focus to highervalue downstream production,” it said.
MYBiomass chief executive officer ( CEO) R. Puvaneswari said the company would adopt an inclusive 360 degree publicprivate business model to develop a sustainable ecosystem for biorefineries.
“Our goal is to be a pioneer in setting up commercial biorefinery with potential participation from technology providers, off-takers and investors.
“We are glad to partner with API to support the national vision of being a regional green chemicals and materials hub,” she said.
Meanwhile, API CEO Dr Theodora Retsina said API has developed a suite of nanocellulose products, including hydrophilic and hydrophobic varieties and is excited to work with MYBiomass to develop market and prototype applications.
“Our Bioplus production process is robust, flexible, low cost and can virtually use any biomass as feedstock,” said Retsina.
