CIMB: 6-digit pin required for contactless transaction
KUALA LUMPUR: Contactless debit card holders are required to enter the six- digit personal identification number ( PIN) for transactions above RM250 from July 1, 2017, said CIMB Bank Bhd (CIMB).
In a statement yesterday, CIMB said currently, each contactless transaction was limited to RM250 and signature or PIN was required for transactions above the amount.
“There are also fraud controls in our system that will detect and deal with the unauthorised transactions based on a certain logic set by the bank,” it said.

There are also fraud controls in our system that will detect and deal with the unauthorised transactions based on a certain logic set by the bank. CIMB
to social media reports on certain applications being able to “pick up” data from contactless cards.
The bank said each contactless transaction included a unique code that changes with each purchase, which could only be used once and could only be generated by the chip in the original contactless card.
“This prevents a counterfeit card from being produced and used from the intercepted card security details,” it said.
It said each transaction could only be made when the contactless debit card was waved within 4cm or tapped at the contactless card reader,” it said.
CIMB Bank said the contactless terminal could only process one transaction at a time and the merchant also must have first entered the transaction amount for you to approve.
“Hence, the customers will only get billed once for the transaction,” it said, ruling out the likelihood of making two payments when the card was waved twice at the reader.
On having more than one contactless card in one’s wallet and the wallet was tapped on the contactless reader, CIMB said, no transaction would go through when the reader detected more than one card.
“You will need to do the transaction again with the relevant card,” it said.
