Community leaders hold CNY media night

-

KUCHING: The Chinese community leaders here recently held a ‘Chinese New Year Media Night 2017’ to celebrate the occasion and also as a gesture of gratitude to the local media fraternity.

Event organising chairman Datuk Richard Wee said the occasion was to extend their appreciation to the media for cooperation and assistance rendered throughout the year.

“We hope that in the coming years, we would be able to continue the good relationship and cooperation and also for the next year to be a better year for everyone,” he said in his speech at Lido Star Lounge on Sunday.

In his brief remarks, the event’s guest-of-honour Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian expressed his gratitude to the local media for showing professional responsibility, adhering to media ethics and not only focusing on their business interest.

He added failing to do so would jeopardise the media’s credibility as the public could claim a news report to be a fake one.

“Therefore, please stay (true) to your professionalism,” he said, hoping that the media and the Chinese community would continue work closely together.

The event was facilitated by 20 Chinese community leaders – Wee himself, Chai Tze Khim, Micheal Teo Kim Huat, Datuk Sim Swee Yong, Datuk Wee Kok Tiong, Dato Sri Lau Wei Kiong, Datuk Yii Chi Hau, Dato Sri Vincent Lee Kee Lung, Pemancha Ko Wai Neng, Penghulu Tan Heng Kee, Tan Jit Kee, Kapitan Hu Hee Juen, Tan Guek Kee, Lim Ah Tek, Chua Seng Chia, Wong Tiong Hook, Jeffrey Choo, Tay Boon Sin, Lee Ik Shark, and Lau Soon Yiun.

Prior to the event, members of the media and the organising committee observed a moment of silence to honour the memory of the state’s fifth chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

About 200 members of the press attended the event, which also featured activities such as a live band performance and lucky draws.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, Consulate-General of People’s Republic of China in Kuching Fu Jijun and former Stampin MP Yong Khoon Seng were among the guests.
