Call 999, not take photos of accidents, public told
KUCHING: People should be placing calls to the authorities instead of taking photographs or videos when untoward incidents happen.
Youth chief of SUPP Kuching branch Stanley Lau reminded the public that they ought to be dialling 999 rather than recording an incident for the purpose of sharing on social networking sites such as Facebook.
“We would like to remind the people to call 999 when they happen to come across any accident or other incidents. It has been observed that many people begin to take photographs or videos and then upload to Facebook instead of doing their bit to alert the authorities to help victims when incidents happen,” he told reporters during a walkabout with chief of Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) Padungan, Mashidi Taha, along Jalan Padungan here yesterday.
It marked the first time SUPP Kuching and Bomba Padungan jointly organised the walkabout to hand out brochures on fire safety to owners of premises and businessmen in the area.
Lau said SUPP Kuching Youth aimed to create and enhance awareness of fire safety among the locals.
He added that the campaign was also meant to remind businessmen of the need to have fire prevention measures in place particularly in view of the coming festive season.
Meanwhile, SUPP Kuching organising secretary Bong Lian Huan said the majority of businessmen along Jalan Padungan were expected to be away between four days and a week for the coming Lunar New Year.
“This is the reason why we need to heighten the awareness among them.”
Bong hoped that more similar campaigns would be carried out with the authorities for the benefit of local communities.
“We look forward to having more collaboration like this. And hopefully this won’t be the last time we are doing it.”
Both Lau and Bong are also councillors of Kuching South City Council ( MBKS).
