State government supports safety awareness activities — Lee

-

MIRI: The state government is supportive of public education programmes which aimed at instilling a safety culture among the people.

Assistant Minister for Land, Air Transportation and Safety Datuk Lee Kim Shin said safety awareness among members of the public could prevent incidents that caused unnecessary loss of properties and lives.

“Most people in general thought the subject matter related to occupational safety and health is only a concern for the oil and gas related industry.

“Actually, the context of safety concern is not only applied to workplace, it is also a matter of concern at home, public areas as wel l as on the road while driving,” he said when officiating at the Miri Occupational Safety & Health Practitioners Society ( MOSHPS) committee Chinese New Year ( CNY) gathering at Grand Palace Hotel here on Sunday.

Lee, who is also MOSHPS patron, wanted the society to organise education programmes related to health and safety for the members of public in the city.

“Safety is a cultural practice among the people in Western count ries. Let ’ s make this safety concern as a culture for our city in order to save more lives.

“I know that MOSHPS i s still a young society but the movement is relevant with current needs. Thus, I hope the society can start to play a proactive role to instil safety concerns among the public by sharing some basic knowledge on safety.”

Society’s chairman Dr Julian Jolly in his address said MOSHPS was registered in March last year and officially launched in August the same year.

Since then, Dr Julian said the society had organised a train the trainers safety awareness programme, adding that it aimed at creating public awareness on safety via educational activities in vi l lages, schools and the workplace.

Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting was among those present at the gathering.
