MIRI: The committee of Surau Abu Bakar As Siddiq in Desa Senadin here has received RM100,000 from prominent local businessman Datuk Hii King Chiong to top up the funds for finishing works on the house of worship.

Last year, King Chiong donated RM200,000 for the start- up construction of the surau, which commenced in early August.

The presentation of cheques was held at the surau site recently where King Chiong, Summit Development director James Hii, Surau Abu Bakar As Siddiq building committee chairman Abang Mohamad Abang Deli, Miri Malay Association chairman Radzali Alision, Miri Division Imam Association chairman Ali Abdul Rahman and local community leader Temenggong Abdul Rahman Fadzil were present.

At the ceremony yesterday, James Hii also announced a personal RM20,000 contribution for the surau project.

In his remarks, Abang Mohamad said the Muslim community in Desa Senadin would forever be indebted to Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem – the state’s fifth chief minister who passed away on Jan 11 this year.

“He (Adenan) was instrumental in the materialisation of the longawaited project – he approved it last year and since then, the committee has been receiving many donations.

“Our new Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari ( Tun Openg) announced RM200,000 for the surau last year and pledged to chip in the same amount to the committee this year.

“( Assistant Minister for Welfare and Community Wellbeing) Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail, who is Bukit Kota assemblyman, also gave us RM50,000,” he said.

After that, Abang Mohamad said the donor list continued to expand to include King Chiong, Lambir assemblyman Ripin Lamat and Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.

According to Abang Mohamad, the project’s progress rate is now over 50 per cent.

“We are now waiting for the shipment of roofing materials. Surau Abu Bakar As Siddiq is expected to be ready this year, and we want to invite Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg to officiate at the opening ceremony,” he said.
