Collecting rubbish caused by indiscriminate dumping a waste of money — Lo

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council ( MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang is urging the public to stop indiscriminate dumping of rubbish.

He said because of the irresponsible and inconsiderate deeds of a small group of people, MPP has to spend quite a huge amount of money to collect the waste.

“MPP spends more than RM100,000 a year to clear the dumping sites and waste that is indiscriminately thrown on the ground. It is more expensive to collect waste that is thrown on the ground because it is not in the proper dustbins.

“Don’t forget, the money that we spend to clear waste from the illegal dumping sites and outside the proper dustbins are taxpayers’ money,” he told a press conference after chairing the MPP full council meeting here yesterday.

Lo, who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman, believed that generally, the public are offended by indiscriminate dumping of waste because they present all kinds of hazards and nuisance.

Therefore, he called on the public to help report the culprits to local authorities with evidence or take their pictures and send them personally to him.

“I will post their pictures on my Facebook page to embarrass them.

“These kinds of people, although they are small in number, are very annoying and making them embarrassed may help stop them from repeating the same thing,” he said.

Lo believed that the law itself would not be effective in stopping people from littering the environment, suggesting that education would be more effective in achieving zero indiscriminate dumping.

“It has to come from the heart. Perhaps, parents can help to educate and nurture their young children from now not to litter.

“What we begin today will help to bring up a society that has the feeling and love for the environment in the future,” he said.
