KUCHING: The issue concerning access to Kampung Keding and Kampung Sapit – the farthest villages in upper Jalan Pencak Borneo here – has been resolved.

Assistant Minister for Public Health Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said an allocation of RM10 million had been approved for construction of roads to the two villages during the administration of the late Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

He said construction of the road from Kampung Kakas to Kampung Kiding had been done.

“Now it’s still gravel surface because it’s not tar- sealed yet. Hopefully, the tar-sealing works would begin after the wet season is over,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Assum to Kampung Kakas, he said the Public Works Department (JKR) was doing the final stage of the actual costing and design.

“By the beginning of next month, JKR should be able to finalise the design and award the contract to construct the proposed Assum- Kakas road,” he said.

Dr Jerip, who is also Mambong assemblyman, said an allocation of RM5 million for each project had been approved under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP).

He said both are R1- standard road projects, which upon completion would make every village within the Mambong state constituency accessible by all kinds of vehicles.

For now, not all of the villages in that area are accessible by road.

Kampung Kiding and Kampung Sapit are the farthest – it takes about two hours for villagers to walk to their houses from the main road.

The majority of the villagers are Bidayuh, and many of them are subsistence farmers.

Four villages – Kampung Semban Teleg, Kampung Rejoi, Kampung Pain Bojong and Kampung Taba Sait which are deemed ‘impossible’ to connect with roads - have been resettled to Bengoh Resettlement Scheme ( BRS).

BRS is accessible by R3standard road.
