Serian Catholic community attend Chinese New Year Mass

-

KUCHING: A Chinese New Year Mass at St Theresa’s Church in Serian attracted a huge crowd of parishioners at 8pm on Chinese New Year Eve.

The Mass was celebrated by the Spiritual Director of the Chinese Unit under the Parish Council Fr Joseph Chai and assisted by Rector Fr Paul Herry and Fr Arockya Raj.

As in previous years, the priest blessed the mandarin oranges brought by the congregation. The Chinese Unit of the Parish Council then gave away Gifts of Love to the priests and the religious to thank them for their spiritual guidance; to the servers to thank them for their hard work; to the elders to thank them for their love and care and to the children hoping they would grow up to be faithful Christians.

“I urge the congregation to thank God for His blessings last year and to pray for a better year ahead. I also urge everyone to have strong faith in the church while bringing up your family. You must pray the Rosary often; you must go to church to attend Mass and listen to the good news from God; you must always help the needy; you must respond to the activities of the Parish Council e.g. the yearly celebration of the Feast Day of Patron Saint etc. and you must spare your time to visit your elderly loved ones as often as possible to make them happy and not feeling lonely,” said Fr Joseph Chai who delivered his homily in Hakka dialect.

He also congratulated members of the youth unit under chairperson Lucy Chai for their various activities such as in Gospel reading, altar service, choir, fundraising and church cleaning.
