KUCHING A taskforce will be set up to tackle the issue of flash floods near the project site of Datuk Temenggong Abang Kipali Abang Akip roundabout in Petra Jaya here.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the taskforce will comprise the Public Works Department ( PWD), Kuching North City Commission ( DBKU) and Drainage and Irrigation Department ( DID).

“Six homes in the low-lying area near the project are affected by flash floods when there is heavy rain and the contractor is finding ways to resolve the issue once and for all,” he said when met at the project site yesterday.

“The problem now is that some of the drains in the project area are already built with reinforced concrete and some are still in their original earth form and when it rains the water just spills over to the low-lying area as the drainage

system is not properly in place and affects these six homes,” he added.

Fadillah said he hoped to solve the issue and they would discuss with the owners of the affected houses to come to a consensus on the matter.

“If need be, they can fill earth to raise the level of the land in the area so that the houses can be of the same level as the elevation of the project or the long-term solution is to relocate the residents,” he suggested.

“We will give the residents the support and assistance and instructions had been given to the contractor to maintain the drainage system during the course of the project so that the rain water will not affect these homes,” he added.

Fadillah said the project is a state government project and the contractor is PPS Works Sarawak, adding the project is expected to be completed by Nov this year.

“Up to date, the project is 42.9 per cent completed and according to schedule it should be 44 per cent. It is slightly behind time due to the severe weather,” he said.

Present at the site were Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, Datuk Bandar of Kuching North Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai and PWD regional manager Vincent Tang Chok Khing.
