‘Flood situation in Anap, Ulu Arip has improved’

-

SIBU: Incessant downpour has caused Kakus River to burst its bank with several low-lying areas in Anap and Ulu Arip inundated.

Assistant Minister for Arts and Culture Datuk John Sikie Tayai said the water level was high in Mupuk area on Sunday but did not reach danger level, adding that the water level in Kakus River had since receded due to improved weather conditions.

Sikie, who is Kakus assemblyman, pointed out that in Ulu Arip, the water level was also high on Sunday which affected Rumah Sigan, however, the water level there too had gone down.

He said Rumah Sirai in Sungai Muput, Ulu Anap, Tatau was also inundated on Sunday but the water level had receded as at 5.30pm on Monday.

“The situation in Anap and Ulu Arip has improved and there should be no problem if the weather improves further,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday when asked on the situation in Anap and Ulu Arip following continuous heavy rain.

Last week, rising water level due to incessant heavy rain forced a primary school SK Kuala Penyarai in Kakus area to close, affecting 91 pupils.

According to Sikie, among the few areas that had been identified as flood-prone in Kakus were Nanga Tau, Kuala Muput in Ulu Anap, Long Biak, Kuala Penyarai and Lubok Kubong.

He said all the 16 evacuation centres in Kakus were on standby, adding that community leaders had been instructed to monitor the situation and work closely with the relevant authorities.

Meanwhile, the weather forecast from the Malaysian Meteorological Department until Feb 6 is rain and moderate downpour in most places in central and east Sarawak over in the morning.

Rain and thunderstorms are also expected in several places in all divisions in the afternoon and at night.
