Tinjar folk work on post-flood clean-up, repairs

-

MIRI: Flood-affected villages in Tinjar have begun cleaning up and repairing the damage caused by the recent flood, which cut off road links and submerged sections of longhouses.

When contacted yesterday, Pemanca Enggah Muga said the majority of affected longhouses in Ulu Teru have begun to repair jetties and walkways washed away by the flood waters during a period of continuous rain last week.

“We are doing repair work and assessing damage to our crops and agriculture, which were submerged by flood waters,” he said.

Enggah said village security and development committees (JKKK) have mobilised gotongroyong teams.

He added that the road leading to the longhouses was also damaged by flooding and requires repairs quickly.

Enggah also thanked the state government as well as relevant government agencies including the district office and Welfare Department for their fast action in assisting the affected villagers by providing essential food items.

Tuai Rumah Jarau Ponyang from Long Tabing, Tinjar also thanked the state government for giving relief assistance to the affected villagers.

He said the district office and civil servants including from the Civil Defence Force and Welfare Department had come to the aid of the 41- door longhouse, which was flooded on the ground floor.

“We received food items including rice, noodles, cooking oil, sugar, salt, coffee and daily essentials from the government agencies,” he said when contacted.

Jarau said the village road linking Long Tabing to Lapok was not accessible during the flood as it was very slippery, muddy and flooded in sections.

He pointed out that villagers had to stop their agriculture activities during that period.

“However, now the water level at Tinjar River is decreasing and we hope no rain will occur upriver as that can cause the river to overflow again,” he added.
